Epiphany


 Give 2022 Back to God 

Last Sunday at the 9:30 Mass, I heard Father Fred say, “Give 2022 back to God.” I then had an epiphany. I had a sudden moment of insight. The year 2022 was a year of ordinary happenings, hardships, and extraordinary blessings. Giving God my ordinary happenings allows for the potential of these events becoming extraordinary. Returning the many blessings I have received allows my gratitude to praise my God for his steady presence in my life. But best of all, giving God my hardships and pains allows for their transformation into gifts and blessings. God is the only one who can heal the brokenness in my past and reveal the beauty and truth of his abundant, love, forgiveness and joy. The year 2023 will be a year of boring ordinary (which does not sound unpleasant to me) painful hardship, and tremendous joy and hope. I invite you to join me in giving back to God the year 2022 for God’s transformation and in looking forward to 2023 with hope and peace.

 Holy Images I want to share holy moments I have seen at Mass. Greeters going beyond the usual “Hello” to check in with parishioners. One parishioner always looks for new faces and introduces herself to them and makes sure they feel welcomed. A wife puts her arm around her husband who has been chronically ill over the past several months. People getting out of their pew to extend the Sign of Peace to particular persons. A woman who looks at the Body of Christ with a warm smile that conveys she is holding the Real Presence of Jesus. During the communion procession, a parishioner with care touches the shoulders of a couple as she passes them. Parents assisting and holding the children of other parents during Mass. Servers who go to their family members to extend the Sign of Peace. I am sure there are many other moments. These moments help me see Christ active and alive in our community and touch my heart. Thank you, holy people!

Abundant in Patience and Mercy is Our Lord              This weekend’s reading affirms the generosity of our God.   God has the abundance of patience and mercy.   Our resource for Liturgy of the Word for Children states that our Gospel conveys “God is willing to wait an entire lifetime for a bad person to give up his or her sins.”   As God allows the weeds to grow, he allows us the time we need to turn back to him.   If only we had the same patience and mercy with our family, neighbors, co-workers, fellow parishioners and even ourselves.             One of the things this COVID pandemic might be teaching us is patience and mercy.   Maybe someone we care about is not ready to meet publicly and we are.   We place on order for food delivery and it is not exactly what we want.   We take the time to go shopping, yet what we want or even need just is not on the ...

Priorities Matter The Gospel today speaks of the Kingdom of God being the “pearl of great price” or the “treasure buried in a field” that one sells all that they have to own.   I don’t think it’s the pearl or treasure that matter.   I think it is the act of putting the pearl or treasure above all.   I think Jesus is the “pearl of great price” and the “treasure buried in a field.”   I must put Jesus first.   But how do I do that?   In our First Reading in the First Book of Kings, Solomon gives an example of kingdom thinking and acting.  As the new king after King David, Solomon knows he is young and needs help.  He calls himself God’s servant.  He says to God, “ Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong.”  This is how I put Jesus first.  I must see myselfs first and always as Jesus’s servant.  I ask for Jesus to give me an understanding heart to judge oth...
